Being a Big Brother or Big Sister is one of the most enjoyable and fulfilling things you’ll ever do. You have the opportunity to help shape a child’s future for the better by empowering him or her to achieve their highest potential. We match Bigs and Littles based off of similar interests, so you and your Little can share the kinds of activities you already like to do!

Play sports together. Go on a hike. Read books. Eat a pizza with extra anchovies. Or just give some advice and inspiration. Whatever it is you enjoy, odds are you’ll enjoy it even more with your Little—and you’ll be making a life-changing impact. You can get involved in either the Community-Based or Site-Based program!

Community-Based

Our traditional mentoring program allows the Big and Little to spend time together at least twice a month for a few hours at a time. Community-Based matches engage in activities that they both enjoy, such as going out for ice cream, attending local sporting events, baking cookies, and going to the zoo. Right now we are encouraging matches to maintain social distance while spending time together, choose outdoor activities whenever possible, and connect virtually!

Site-Based "Lunch Buddies"

Our Site-Based mentoring program, also known as “Lunch Buddies” allows the Big and the Little to see each other during the child’s lunchtime. This is a very easy way for many volunteers to get their feet wet, as the time commitment is minimal (1/2 hour each week). Matches spend the time chatting, working on homework, or playing games.*

*This Fall, matches will not be meeting in-person for the Lunch Buddies program. Virtual programming is coming soon.

What do we achieve?

Big Brothers Big Sisters helps children achieve success in school, avoid risky behaviors such as getting into fights and trying drugs and alcohol, and improve their self-confidence. We hold ourselves accountable to our supporters by regularly measuring our impact.

Who do we serve?

Big Brothers Big Sisters serves children between 5 and 18 years of age in Peoria, Tazewell, Woodford, Knox, and Fulton counties. Our network of volunteers, donors, and supporters comes from all walks of life.

What do we do?
We create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth.

Peoria Event Executive Leadership Team Role:

Serve as a volunteer leader for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s to ensure financial goals are achieved. Commit your company as a top sponsor. Lead or appoint someone to serve as your Company Leader and commit to becoming a top fundraising team at your Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Recruit new companies to partner as sponsors and teams. Become an Elite Grand Champions Club member.

 

Length of Involvement: 10-12 months

Responsibilities

Participate in four Executive Leadership Team meetings. Attend Company Team Kickoff and Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Recruit 3-5 new company sponsors/teams using a targeted approach that include introductions and attending meetings in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association staff. Assist in executing a successful Leadership Roundtable event in conjunction with your fellow ELT members to help identify additional ELT members and or future chair candidates. Work closely with your staff partner to ensure the success of the event.

Peoria Event Community Engagment Committee Member Role:

Serve as a volunteer leader for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Commit to becoming a fundraising team at your Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Recruit 3-5 new community teams Friends & Family Organizations & Clubs Schools Faith-based Assist in recruiting back, retaining and stewarding previous years community teams. Help implement champions plan to cultivate and steward champions club Help implement ways to build community awareness about Walk to End Alzheimer’s and our mission. Help strategize and implement community/friends & family kickoff for Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Model mission fundraising by becoming a Champion.

Length of Involvement:  6-8 months

Responsibilities

Partake in four Community Engagement committee meetings. Work closely with your community engagement chair to ensure the success of the event. Make calls and reach out as needed to various participants.

Peoria Event Experience Role:

The Walk to End Alzheimer’s Event Experience Committee Member will…..

Commit to having a team. Work with the Event Experience Chair to secure Entertainment and Day of Event Volunteers for Walk Day. Ensure there’s a plan in place to recruit and educate participants on AIM - Advocacy. Incorporate Care & Support into Walk Day. Become a Champions Club member.

 

Length of Involvement: 3-4 months

Peoria Walk Chairperson Role:

The Walk to End Alzheimer’s Event Chair will…..

Serve as the volunteer leader for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Commit your company as one of the top three sponsors. Lead or appoint someone to serve as your Company Leader and commit to becoming a top fundraising team at your Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Recruit additional Executive Leadership Team members and lead the ELT as they secure sponsorship and company teams. Assist in recruitment and participation in the Leadership Roundtable Become an Elite Grand Champions Club member. Working with staff leadership, secure next year’s Event Chair.

 

Length of Involvement: 12 - 18 months

Responsibilities

Lead four Executive Leadership Team meetings. Attend Company Team Kickoff and Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Attend Leadership Roundtable (if scheduled during tenure) Work closely with your staff partner to ensure the success of the event.
